Potatoes have received a bad rap when it comes to dogs. But the truth is, potatoes have many nutrients that are excellent for dogs if fed as a treat! Why do some people think that potatoes are bad for dogs?
Glycoalkaloids, which are nerve toxins, can develop onlyw体育 in the stems, shoots and green parts of the skin. So do not feed your dog a raw potato, or the other parts mentioned here. But a baked potato? That is delicious!
w体育What makes white potatoes good for dogs? They provide vitamins B3, B6, C, manganese, and phosphorous. They also contain antioxidants as well as potassium, iron, copper and fiber. White potatoes are also believed by holistic practitioners to actually reduce some causes of inflammation and rheumatism.
w体育What makes Idaho potatoes an extra special treat? Warm temperatures during the day with cold nights and rich soil rich with volcanic properties. During our trip to Idaho, we certainly indulged, and we did not leave our dogs out of this culinary treat!
1 organic, Idaho russet potato, cleaned and scrubbed
1 tablespoon organic olive oil
1 can, wild, water packed sardines
w体育1/2 cup, organic, cooked green beans
Other dog friendly toppings can be added i.e., turkey bacon, organic, cooked kale or spinach, or nonfat greek yogurt.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Scrub the potato, and pierce the skin several times with a knife or fork. Rub the skin with olive oil. Place the potato in the preheated oven, and bake for 90 minutes, or until slightly soft and golden brown.
Let cool completely and cut into bite size pieces. Top with your dog’s favorite ingredients, such as those mentioned above.
